Freialdenhoven is a northern part of Aldenhoven in the Düren district , until 1972 the Jülich district .

Freialdenhoven is the ancestral home of the Althoff circus family , which originated here around 1660 and had their winter home here until the Second World War .

history

Freialdenhoven was located on the Roman road from Jülich via Geilenkirchen to Sittard and perhaps had a settlement at that time, as a milestone found in 1866 can point to. The name comes from a farm in a pacified and protected forest area. Documented documents are 1029 “Altenhof”, around 1100 “Vrenenaldenhoven”, around 1200 “Vrei-Aldenhof” and 1431 “Fredenaldenhoeuen” (with u instead of v).

In 1166 there is evidence of a parish church in Freialdenhoven, which gave way to a new building in the 15th century, which in turn was blown up by German soldiers in 1944. The current parish church of St. Mauritius was built in the 1950s.

In earlier centuries there was a castle next to the church. In the 14th century, Count Wilhelm V von Jülich (1328-1361) wanted to deprive the knighthood of his county from their independence, whereas the Freialdenhovener castle lord Dietrich Schinnemann rebelled and made himself the leader of the free knighthood against the count. In the following battle Freialdenhoven was captured by Wilhelm V, the castle was destroyed and not rebuilt.

On September 18, 1678, Freialdenhoven was sacked by French soldiers, which is why the oldest baptismal records still in existence today date from 1691.

On January 1, 1972 Freialdenhoven was incorporated into Aldenhoven.

coat of arms

The coat of arms is divided into gold and black; above a black, growing, red-armored, double-tailed lion, below three golden equal-armed crosses set in a ratio of 2 to 1. This is justified with the earlier affiliation to the Duchy of Jülich and with the connection to Christianity Jülich and the two parish patrons St. Mauritius and St. Urbanus.

The golden cross floating freely within the laurel wreath in the Aldenhovener coat of arms is taken from the aldermen's seal of the Schöffengericht Freialdenhoven and represents the symbol of the then free jurisdiction .
