The SC Borussia Freialdenhoven 1912 is a German football club from Freialdenhoven . The first team of the club, which has 297 members (as of 2020), will play in the Middle Rhine League in the 2020/21 season .

history

On October 10, 1912, the association was founded independently by 19 boys between the ages of 14 and 18. The lack of money for the purchase of the play equipment was borrowed from private individuals. At the first meeting of the association, Heinrich Wirtz was elected chairman; the first name of the association was also decided: Viktoria Freialdenhoven . The club's first game was lost against a team from neighboring Siersdorf . Was played in the Benden on a respectively suitable for this meadow. Often the players, referees and spectators had to flee from the owners and tenants because of this “misappropriation”.

In 1915 the game was interrupted by the events of the First World War. Since most of the young men were called up for military service, gaming was suspended until further notice. At the end of the war, the association complained about three dead, including 1st chairman Heinrich Wirtz. After the war, the association actually had to be re-established. For this purpose, a sports festival was organized with 18 participating clubs on the so-called Fettwiese . In addition, a new club costume was purchased, but not in the club colors black and white, but in the "embarrassed colors" blue and white.

At the beginning of the 1920s, a meadow was leased in what was then Kamp for 120 marks , a high sum for those times. In 1921 the "wild" game stopped. The club became a member of the West German Football Association (WFV) Gau Düren and played in the C-class. The too often occurring name "Viktoria" was changed to "Borussia". The new club owner Jean Dohmen provided the athletes with a meadow that was used as a sports field until 1949. Until then, people had played In den Benden and on Fettwiese. In the 1922/23 season, the club made it to the 2nd district, making it the first major success in the club's history. The team also included "legionaries" for the first time, since the game was suspended in Siersdorf, three Siersdorfers played for the club from Freialdenhoven.

After the new class division in 1930 one could celebrate another success by winning the championship in the 2nd district class. In the playoff against Frankonia Broich , the team won 3-2 on a neutral spot in Barmen and was promoted to the 1st district (today district league A). Shortly after the Gau championship, the club was hit by a tragic fate, the player Adam Schmitz was killed in a serious mining accident in Alsdorf .

From 1939 the Borussen-Elf was replenished by Wehrmacht soldiers who were stationed nearby, including Holt and Stawe from Hamburger SV , Knop from Altona 93 and national player Jakob Streitle from FC Bayern Munich . During the Second World War , gaming operations were almost completely shut down. A total of 35 young club members fell victim to the war, seven are still missing today.

After the Second World War, the sports field in Freialdenhoven was restored. Tank tracks, shell holes and scattered trees had to be removed. As early as 1946 Borussia was able to provide a youth team again, in the same year they fought against SC Jülich 10 and SC Ederen for promotion to the district league, in the end one point was missing for promotion. On August 21, 1949, the new sports field on Ederener Weg was inaugurated as part of a sports festival. Opponent was Prussia Dellbrück . In the early 1950s, the club played in the 1st district class and reached the top of the table there. The squad was well staffed, especially in the period from 1955 to 1957, but the team was relegated to the 2nd district class in the 1957/58 season.

The 1960s brought back promotion to the 1st district league. In addition, Borussia celebrated its “50th anniversary” in 1962. In 1964 an official cup was played for the first time in Dürboslar . Borussia defeated the team from Niedermerz 2-1 in the final and was the first title holder of the challenge cup. In the late sixties, the club fought relegation several times. After this could be averted in two playoffs against Inden and Gereonsweiler in 1965 , the club went back to the 2nd district class in 1966.

In the 1970 season, Borussia landed one point behind Koslar in second place in the table and had to play a decider in Altdorf against the second in the other group . Freialdenhoven defeated the team from Hambach after 0: 1 half-time deficit still 5: 1 and rose again to the 1st district class.

With 23: 5 points they reached the autumn championship in the 1st district class in the promotion year 1970 and ended up in 5th place at the end of the season. In the summer of 1971 the venue on Ederener Straße was completely redesigned and an ash area was added. In order to keep the game going, the league games were played in Siersdorf. After serious injuries to several players, they were beaten by four points at the bottom of the table after the first half of the season, but thanks to a successful second half of the season, in which mainly the players of the 2nd team had to be used, they made it to rank 9, which ensured relegation.

Both Borussia teams did not manage to get sent off during the entire 1971/72 season and received the fairness prize at the end of the season. In the following years from 1973 to 1978 Borussia always ended up among the first 7 teams in the 1st district class and was even able to book a runner-up championship.

1979 became one of the milestones in the club's history. Borussia became champions of the 1st district class and rose to the district league for the first time in the club's history. Even before the first game of the season in the Rur-Wurm district league, Borussia played in the newly created cup, in which the champions of the 1st district class of the Düren and Jülich sports districts met. After a 4-2 home win against Gürzenich , a 1-1 draw in the second leg was enough to become the first club to ever win this trophy.

Together with the neighboring club SC Ederen 1910, a joint A youth team was formed for the first time for the 1979/80 season. A year later, all of the youth teams from Ederen and Freialdenhoven were merged, and the cooperation between the two clubs in the youth field has continued to this day.

In the 1980s, the club had to play in repeatedly changing district league seasons; Until 1983 they were still in the Rur-Wurm group, in 1984 they played in the Aachener Staffel and from 1985 to 1987 in the Rur-Erft group. In 1987, Borussia achieved third place, the best result since being in the district league. Prominent players also came to the club, in 1982 it was Winfried Stradt , former B national team player , who had previously played for Alemannia Aachen and TeBe Berlin .

At the end of the 1980s, a financially strong sponsor approached Borussia, the long-time boss of this company, Rolf Imdahl, is both manager and honorary president of Borussia. That is why he is often referred to by the fans as the "father of success". In the 1990/91 season one was with 55: 5 points and a goal difference of 119:18 champions of the district league, a result that had never been achieved before any promoted district league. The lead over runner-up Dremmen was 13 points and 73 goals.

The first national league season in the club's history ended in 1992 with the second rise in a row, with 53:11 points and 77:27 goals they became champions. In addition to the team and the board around Rolf Imdahl, coach Hans Lipka and his sons Hans Peter, Jürgen and Udo, all of whom played for Borussia, played a decisive role in these successes.

Borussia also achieved more than expected in the first association league season 1992/93, after the first half of the season one could already dream of the third championship title in a row, but in the end one point was missing on the champion and later promoted Germania Teveren. For the game against Teveren, 3,300 spectators came to the stadium on Ederener Straße, a record for a championship game to date.

Under the direction of the two-time German champion and eight-time German national player Wilfried Hannes , Borussia won the championship title of the Association League Middle Rhine in the 1999/2000 season with 51 points and a better goal difference compared to the same point VfL Rheinbach and thus rose to the Oberliga Nordrhein , which is still today greatest success in the club's history.

Freialdenhoven was a special figure on the Oberliga map. With only about 1,000 inhabitants, the village was the smallest major league town in Germany. Now they played in the midst of city teams and traditional clubs, such as Fortuna Düsseldorf , Schwarz-Weiß Essen , 1. FC Bocholt , Wuppertaler SV and numerous amateur teams from national and second division clubs .

In the first league season 2000/01 , Borussia reached 9th place with 44 points, and for the first time in the club's history they reached the finals of the Middle Rhine Cup , where they were narrowly defeated by Blau-Weiß Brühl 2: 3. The local press described the season as "the most successful in the club's history". Despite this successful season, Freialdenhoven was always considered a relegation candidate, but in the first three years of membership in the league, Borussia was always able to keep the class early. In summer 2003, FC Schalke 04 , a current Bundesliga team, came to the stadium on Ederener Strasse for the first time.

Before the 2003/04 season , new turf had to be laid at short notice because the square was destroyed by sabotage. Furthermore, one had to look around at short notice for a new trainer, as the originally planned Heinz Otten did not have the required license and the association refused an exception. At the winter break they were fourth from bottom of the table with just 15 points, and a 1-1 draw at GFC Düren prevented relegation on the last day of the match. After a season at GFC Düren, coach Winnie Hannes returned to Borussia in Freialdenhoven.

With the end of the 2004/05 season, Borussia put an early decision into action, Borussia voluntarily relegated to the Association League. The effort to be carried out for the upper league game operations could no longer be met with the few helpers. At the beginning of July 2005, in front of 3,400 spectators in the stadium on Ederener Strasse, they received "the great Borussia" from Mönchengladbach and lost 4-0.

In the summer of 2007, the "successful Imdahl / Hannes team" succeeded again in bringing the professionals from Mönchengladbach to Freialdenhoven for another test match. This was preceded by a player transfer of the highly talented Cengiz Can from Ederener Straße to Nordpark. Jupp Heynckes had come specially to observe Cengiz Can. Due to a hit by Jens Engert, who was trained in his own youth, Borussia only lost 4-1 this time.

In the following playing years, the club reached top placements in the Middle Rhine League, best of which was third in the 2008/09 season. In 2008 the club reached the final of the Middle Rhine Cup again, but had to admit defeat there again 2: 3 to FC Wegberg-Beeck. Borussia got off to a very successful start in the 2010/11 season, with the team remaining undefeated in twelve games in a row. After the first half of the season, the team was leader of the Middle Rhine League. In the second half of the season the team was only overtaken by FC Junkersdorf , so the season ended in second place.

In the summer of 2012, Borussia celebrated its 100th anniversary with the congratulations from Reiner Calmund and NRW Prime Minister Hannelore Kraft . For the club anniversary of SC Jülich in October 2012 in the Jülich Karl-Knipprath-Stadion they met Bundesliga promoted Fortuna Düsseldorf, until the 76th minute Borussia led 1-0 with a goal by Kelly Ayuya, before Fortuna with three goals in ten minutes won 3-1.

After the 2019/20 season, coach Wilfried Hannes ended his career at Borussia after a total of 20 years. His last competitive game as coach of Freialdenhoven was won 2-0 against local rivals 1. FC Düren in March 2020. Hannes worked at the club from 1999 to 2003 and 2004 to 2020 and shaped the most successful period in the club's history.

At the regional level, the association is the most successful in the Düren district. Borussia Freialdenhoven has won the district cup a total of 17 times.

Friendships and rivalries

Borussia maintains a friendly relationship with some clubs from the region, but above all with SC Ederen, with whom they also cooperate in the youth sector. A real fan friendship exists with Wuppertaler SV , this results from the time in the Oberliga Nordrhein, in which they played together in a league.

Local rivals are u. a. Viktoria Arnoldsweiler , 1. FC Düren and FC Wegberg-Beeck .
