Ederen is a district of Linnich in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

Ederen must have been inhabited as early as the Roman times, as the finds of four Roman sandstone heads and a grave from the 3rd century suggest.

The first documented mention of Ederen dates from 1139, when knight Christian von Ederen (Ethdern) is listed in the entourage of Archbishop Arnold I of Cologne. The knights of Ederen are proven up to the beginning of the 15th century.

At the time of the Duchy of Jülich , Ederen belonged to the Aldenhoven office . In 1798 the place came to the Département de la Roer and thus to the canton of Linnich.

On July 1, 1969, the municipalities of the Linnich Office, to which Ederen belonged since 1946, merged to form the city of Linnich. In the course of the second reorganization program in NRW, the reorganization of the Aachen area, Floßdorf was added.

Parish, church

The parish Ederen is mentioned for the first time in 1676. In earlier times Ederen was part of the church in Freialdenhoven , after which the parish came to the deanery Jülich , from 1827 to 1957 to the deanery Aldenhoven and since then to the deanery Linnich.

A chapel is said to have existed as early as 1300. In 1770 the parish church was built, which was destroyed in November 1944 during the Second World War.

Parish patron is St. Martyr Pancras . The second parish patron is St. Willibrord venerated.

Willibrordus fountain

The source of the Willibrordus fountain, which was used as a source of drinking water until 1925, rises in a depression . The fountain feeds a brook that flows into the Merzbach above Welz . The stream is named after the Apostle of Peace Willibrord, who, according to a legend, preached and baptized in Ederen. In 1898 the residents of the village built the "Willibrordus Chapel".

traffic

From 1911 to 1971 the Jülich Kreisbahn drove its trains through the town. Since 1971, the Deutsche Bundespost , and later the Düren Kreisbahn with the bus routes 278, 281 and 517, ensured local public transport . The station of the Jülich Kreisbahn, which was expanded from 1908 to 1912 between Jülich and Puffendorf with a total distance of 15.22 kilometers, has not been used since passenger traffic was discontinued in 1971.
