Location map of Welz

Welz is the fifth smallest district of the city of Linnich in the Düren district , to which it has belonged since the municipal reorganization in 1969.

Geographical location

The village is located in a valley between Linnich and the two districts of Ederen and Rurdorf . Welz is traversed by the Merzbach , which can be crossed on two bridges with motor vehicles. The small wooded slope in the direction of Rurdorf is jokingly called the “Welzer Alps” in the vernacular, the ravine over this slope “Grad”.

Until the implementation of the Schengen Agreement and the European internal market , the place belonged to the customs border district .

history

The place was mentioned for the first time in a church directory around 1300.

The Limburg exclave Welz and Rurdorf on the Ferraris map (1771–1777)

Until 1794, Welz and its neighboring town of Rurdorf were in the Duchy of Limburg ; both places thus formed an enclave in the Duchy of Jülich . The coming of the Teutonic Order in Siersdorf near Baesweiler owned a farm in Welz. Due to the eventful history of Limburg, Welz belonged to the House of Burgundy , the Spanish Netherlands , the Dutch States General and the Austrian Netherlands . Due to its former membership in the Duchy of Limburg, the Mairie Welz was in the canton of Rolduc ( Herzogenrath ), Arrondissement Maastricht , Département Niedermaas ( Meuse-Inférieure ) during the French period from 1795 to 1814 . Thus Welz was an enclave in the Rur department . In 1816 Welz became the seat of a Prussian mayor's office in the Jülich district .

The municipality of Welz was incorporated into the new Linnich-Land Office in 1936, and the Linnich Office was formed in 1946. On July 1, 1969, Welz was incorporated into the city of Linnich as part of the municipal reorganization.

religion

The Catholic Church is dedicated to Saint Lambertus . Until 1794 (?) The collature was initially the responsibility of the Teutonic Order Commander Siersdorf and later the Teutonic Order Commander St. Aegidius in Aachen , which was subordinate to the Deutschordensballei Alden Biesen . Until 1818 the parish of Welz belonged to the diocese of Liège .

economy

Welz is regionally known for the private brewery and distillery , which was founded in 1828 by the Rainer family and which, after the closure of the breweries in Aachen and Waldfeucht-Haaren, is considered the most western brewery in Germany.
