Suitcases

Suitcaseen is a rural district of the city of Linnich in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The village is located between Glimbach and Hottorf away from the main traffic routes. Kofferen is also known as the musicians' village in Jülich Land. The residents call themselves baggage handlers . On the western edge of the village there is a fire water pond called "Schroof". This term goes back to the Celtic name for swamp .

history

Suitcase was first mentioned in a document in 1336. In the Middle Ages, Kofferen belonged to the Duchy of Jülich and was in the Körrenzig Dingstuhl of the Boslar Office. A branch chapel of the church in Boslar is said to have existed as early as the 8th century . In the 12th century, Bernhard von Clairvaux is said to have given a crusade sermon here, which later made Kofferen a place of pilgrimage .

In a fire disaster in 1758 almost the entire village burned down.

The villagers were involved in the Buchholzbusch and Müntz-Hottorfer Busch forests in the direction of Lövenich . In the middle of the 19th century, the forests were completely cleared.

On February 24, 1945, Kofferen was captured by American soldiers of the 102nd Infantry Division of the 9th US Army in the course of Operation Grenade .

On July 1, 1969, Kofferen was reclassified to Linnich as part of the previous municipality of Körrenzig.

Musicians and secret language

"Musikantenbrunnen" on the Schroof

From the beginning to the middle of the 18th century, a new job description developed in the village. Wandering groups of musicians moved from suitcases to the near and far surroundings to play to dance . This happened until the middle of the 20th century.

They used a secret language between themselves that was related to Rotwelschen . Even today, some elderly villagers can understand and converse in this language. 320 words have been handed down .

religion

The population is predominantly Catholic. The church is dedicated to St. Margaretha .
