Obermerz is a desert in Aldenhoven in the Düren district . The place was excavated in 1972 in the course of the “Zukunft” open-cast lignite mine . Most recently it had 107 inhabitants, who, like the residents of Langweiler and Warden-Ost , were relocated to Kinzweiler between 1965 and 1971 . The neighboring village of Niedermerz to the east still exists today.

Obermerz was on the Merzbach before its diversion between the Aldenhoven district of Schleiden and the Eschweiler district of Laurenzberg . It belonged together with Laurenzberg, Lürken and Langweiler to the Catholic parish of Laurenzberg. The Valentin street in Kinzweiler commemorates the patron saint Valentine of Terni the top Merzer St. Valentin Chapel.
