Engelsdorf is the smallest district of the municipality of Aldenhoven in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

Engelsdorf is located north of Aldenhoven, east of Dürboslar, west of Koslar and south of Merzenhausen (both city of Jülich ). The Merzbach flows through Engelsdorf .

history

The former moated castle Engelsdorf is mentioned as early as the 11th century. It has been destroyed several times. In the 19th century, the castle came into the possession of the Opfergelt family.

Engelsdorf, or at least Engelsdorf Castle, has worn several coats of arms over the years - each with a different story. The current village coat of arms is explained as follows: A golden tower floating in green, accompanied on the right and left by a ploughshare. The historical explanation says: Since 1320 the farmers have been cultivating their fields under the protection of the castle, which is why the plowshares appear in the coat of arms.

The town's old school was closed in 1968 and later demolished. Today residential houses stand at this point. The building on the village square, built later by the community, was used as a school kindergarten until the turn of the millennium. The building is now only used as a community center.

On January 1, 1972, Engelsdorf was incorporated into Aldenhoven.

societies

Local fire department

The fire brigade is largely responsible for community life in the village. The Engelsdorf fire fighting group, which belongs to the Aldenhoven volunteer fire brigade , is an integral part of the village community and consists of young and old villagers.

May society Koslar-Engelsdorf 1857

This association, which is dedicated to May custom , has existed as a community between the two places Koslar (city of Jülich) and Engelsdorf (municipality of Aldenhoven) since 1857. The two places still belong to the same parish of St. Adelgundis today . Every year the members of the May Society set up a maypole in each of the two locations, while the actual May Fair, along with a pageant and ball, takes place in Koslar.

IG Engelsdorf

The Engelsdorf interest group has also existed in the village since 2005. The association made sure that the building of the old preschool kindergarten was preserved. Since then, the building has been used for village life and rooms have also been created there for the youth of the village.

traffic

The federal motorway 44 runs directly on the southern outskirts . Engelsdorf can be reached with a collective call taxi .
