The castle Engelsdorf is in Engelsdorf , in the municipality of Aldenhoven in Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia , on Untermerzbach .

The former moated castle was first mentioned in a document in 1080. It has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. From the thickness of the walls and the moat , which received its water from the Merzbach, you can still see that this castle was heavily fortified in earlier times . It was the family seat of the Lords of Engelsdorf .

1476 with the estate planning of Aachen provost Reynart of Palant get his nephews and brothers Werner III. zu Palant, Herr zu Breitenbend and Gerhard (Geyrhart) von Palant shares in the house, palace and castle of Engelsdorf , which probably became a Ganerbeburg . They immediately sold their shares to Emont zu Pralant . The defensive wall that closed off the courtyard and the moated castle was also preserved until 1850.

In the 19th century, the castle came into the possession of the Opfergelt family.

In 2007 the Gothic tower vault was secured, which threatened to be pushed apart by the masonry. The renovation costs amounted to 50,000 euros.

The artist couple Fernández-Ortíz from Chile have owned the castle since 1989 and run a studio in it.
