John Thomas Alderdice, Baron Alderdice (born March 28, 1955 in Ballymena ) is a Northern Irish politician .

life and career

Alderdice was born to the Rev. David Alderdice and Annie Margaret Helena Shields. He attended the Ballymena Academy and the Queen's University of Belfast (QUB). In 1977 he married Joan Hill, with whom he has two sons and a daughter. Since 1988 he has worked as a consulting psychiatrist and has also taught in the medical school at Queen's University.

The Alliance Party was founded in 1970 as an alternative to denominationalism . Alderdice became their leader prior to the 1987 general election and ran for them in the Belfast East constituency . He received 32.0% of the vote, the highest percentage that his party has ever achieved in a Westminster election. Although he lost to Peter Robinson , but was able to establish the Alliance.

On October 8, 1996, he was promoted to Life Peer with the title Baron Alderdice , of Knock in the City of Belfast . He is a Liberal Democrat in the House of Lords .

He was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly for Belfast East in 1998 , became its first speaker, and held that office until 2004. However, the "assembly" was suspended most of the time. In 2005 he was elected President of Liberal International .
