István Dobi [ ˈiʃtvaːn ˈdobi ] (born December 31, 1898 in Szőny , Austria-Hungary , † November 24, 1968 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian communist politician and prime minister and state president.

Political career and promotion to minister

As a working-class son, Dobi was a member of the Social Democratic Party in the 1920s . In 1936 he joined the Small Farmers Party . During the Second World War he was active in the anti-fascist resistance movement.

In 1945 he became a member of the National Assembly and chairman of the faction of the Small Farmers Party. On February 4, 1946, he became Minister of Agriculture in Ferenc Nagy's cabinet . In November 1946 he took over the office of Minister of State . From May 31, 1947 to December 10, 1948 he was again Minister of Agriculture in the cabinets of Mátyás Rákosi and Lajos Dinnyés .

In June 1947 he became chairman of the Small Farmers' Party , which he left in 1948 to join the Communist Party of the Hungarian Working People (MDP).

Prime Minister and President

Dobi became Prime Minister on December 10, 1948, succeeding Dinnyés. He held this office until his replacement by Rákosi on August 14, 1952. In addition, he was from 1949 to 1960 Deputy Chairman of the Patriotic Popular Front. 1951 to 1952 he was also chairman of the United Agriculture Council.

On August 14, 1952, he was elected as the successor to Sándor Rónai as Chairman of the Presidential Council and thus President. As such, he was re-elected in 1957 and 1963. As President of the Republic, he supported efforts to put down the popular uprising of 1956.

In 1962 he was awarded the International Lenin Peace Prize and in 1967 the title " Hero of Socialist Labor ".

Dobi remained in the office of President until April 13, 1967, when he was replaced by Pál Losonczi .
