Zoltan Tildy
Zoltán Tildy [ ˈzoltaːn ˈtildi ] (born November 18, 1889 in Lučenec , Austria-Hungary ; † August 3, 1961 in Budapest ) was Hungarian Prime Minister from 1945 to 1946 and Hungarian President from 1946 to 1948.
Life
Tildy was an evangelical pastor and member of parliament for the small farmers' party in interwar Hungary. After the occupation of Hungary by the Red Army , he became provisional prime minister and won the elections to the National Assembly in November 1945. After the proclamation of the republic , Tildy was elected president on February 1, 1946. With the support of the Soviet Union , however, the Hungarian Communist Party prevailed more and more and achieved the resignation of Prime Minister Ferenc Nagy in May 1947 . The largely powerless president lost his office in 1948 and was placed under house arrest. On November 3, 1956, Tildy was once again appointed to the government of Imre Nagy , which was deposed a short time later by Soviet troops. Tildy died in Budapest in 1961.
