József Szlávy

József Szlávy von Érkenéz and Okány (born November 23, 1818 in Győr ; † August 8, 1900 in Zsitvaújfalu , Kingdom of Hungary , now Slovakia ) was a Hungarian politician, Prime Minister of Hungary from 1872 to 1874 and Austria-Hungary's joint Minister of Finance from 1880 to 1882 .

Life

József Szlávy studied at the Schemnitz Mining Academy, received his engineering degree in 1844 and entered the civil service. Politically, he became a supporter of Ferenc Deák's liberal party . He is assigned to the conservative part of the party. During the revolution of 1848/49 he was government commissioner responsible for the country's mining. He was imprisoned after the defeat of Hungary in 1849 and sentenced to five years imprisonment. Dismissed after two years, he lived in seclusion until he became a member of the re-convened Reichstag in 1861 . In 1865 he became chief clan of Bihar County .

After the compromise with Austria in 1867 , Szlávy served as State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior and in 1870 as Minister of Commerce in the Gyula Andrássy government . On December 2nd, 1872 he was appointed Prime Minister by King Ferenc József . He only held the office until March 1, 1874. He then acted as finance minister and then defense minister responsible for the Honvéd Landwehr . As finance minister, he continued the austerity policies of his predecessor Menyhért Lónyay . From 1879 to 1880 he was chairman of parliament , from 1880 to 1882 joint kuk finance minister and from 1894 to 1896, when he resigned for health reasons, he chaired the magnate house . He was also a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences .
