Life
Menyhért was the son of János Lónyay (1796-1859) member of a Protestant noble family. He studied law in Pest and in 1843 became a member of the state parliament for the opposition under Ferenc Deák . In 1845 he married Emilia Kappel (1825–1888), with whom he had four children. During the revolution of 1848/49 he was Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Finance. Therefore he had to leave the country after the defeat of Hungary in 1849 and was able to return from Paris after an amnesty at the end of 1850 . At first he was active in banking and insurance, founded the first Hungarian insurance company in 1858 and a credit institution in 1866.
After balancing with Austria in 1867 , Lónyay became finance minister in the Gyula Andrássy government . Politically shaped by reform liberalism, he modernized the country's finances and pursued strict austerity measures in the state finances. On May 21, 1870 he was appointed joint kuk finance minister, when he won the trust of Emperor Franz Joseph . In August 1871 he was raised to the rank of count and on November 14, 1871 Hungarian Prime Minister.
When Lónyay was charged with corruption in the Reichstag in November 1872 , he resigned on December 2nd. In 1875 he became a member of the Magnate House and remained a member of the Reichstag and President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences until 1882 .
