István Bittó

István (Stefan) Count Bittó von Sárosfalva (born May 3, 1822 in Sárosfa , Kingdom of Hungary , today Slovakia , † March 7, 1903 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian politician and 1874/75 Prime Minister of Hungary .

Bittó studied law and entered the legal civil service. During the revolution of 1848/49 he was a revolutionary and a member of the Reichstag . He fled the country after the defeat of Hungary in 1849, but returned in 1851. From 1861 Bittó was a member of the newly convened Reichstag for the liberal party Ferenc Deáks .

After balancing with Austria , Bittó was Vice President of the House of Representatives of the Reichstag from 1869 to 1872 and served as Minister of Justice in the Menyhért Lónyay government in 1871/72 . On March 1, 1874, he was appointed Prime Minister by King Ferenc József . He only held the office until March 2, 1875 when he had to give way to Béla Wenckheim . In the Kálmán Tisza era (1875–1890) he was one of the few formerly liberal oppositionists. From 1899 until his death, Bittó was a member of the magnate house .
