Károly Németh [ ˈkaːroj ˈneːmɛt ] (born December 14, 1922 in Páka near Lenti , Hungary ; † March 12, 2008 ) was a Hungarian communist politician and former president.

Németh joined the Communist Party as early as 1945, which was renamed the Hungarian Working People's Party in 1948 . After a year as a candidate, he became a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party (USAP) in 1957 . From 1958 to 1988 he was a member of the National Assembly .

From 1960 to 1965 he was Secretary of the USAP Central Committee. He then became first secretary of the party leadership in Budapest . Between 1970 and 1989 he was also a member of the Politburo of the USAP Central Committee . In 1974 he returned to the Central Committee as a secretary. In 1985 he became Vice Secretary General of the USAP Central Committee and thus deputy to János Kádár as party leader.

On June 25, 1987, Németh succeeded Pál Losonczi as Chairman of the Presidential Council and thus President of Hungary. After a little over a year in office, he was replaced in this office on June 29, 1988 by Brúnó Straub .
