Pál Losonczi (1968)

Pál Losonczi [ ˈpaːl ˈloʃontsi ] (born September 18, 1919 in Bolhó , Somogy county , † March 28, 2005 in Kaposvár , Somogy county) was a Hungarian communist politician and president.

The son of small farmers was one of the winners of the land reform in 1945 . From 1948 to 1960 he was chairman of the agricultural production cooperative “Red Star” in Barcs . Losonczi joined the Communist Party in 1945, which he later represented as a member of the National Assembly from 1953 to 1989 .

On January 15, 1960 he was appointed Minister of Agriculture in the cabinet of Ferenc Münnich . He held this office until April 13, 1967 in the cabinets of János Kádár and Gyula Kállai .

On April 13, 1967, he succeeded István Dobi as Chairman of the Presidential Council and thus President of Hungary. On June 25, 1987, Károly Németh was elected as his successor.

From 1975 to 1987 he was also a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Hungarian Socialist Workers Party .
