Sándor Garbai - Proclamation of the Hungarian Soviet Republic on March 21, 1919

Sándor Garbai [ ˈʃaːndor ˈɡɒrbɒ.i ] (born March 27, 1879 in Kiskunhalas , † November 7, 1947 in Paris ) was a Hungarian politician and from March 21, 1919 until her demise on August 1, 1919 chairman ( prime minister ) of the revolutionary Government Council ( Forradalmi Kormányzótanács ) of the Hungarian Soviet Republic .

Life

Although Garbai, who belonged to the Hungarian Social Democratic Party ( Magyarországi Szociáldemokrata Párt ; MSZDP), de jure held the highest post in the council government, de facto Béla Kun , the People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs, soon gained significant influence on government affairs. Garbai's weak position in the council government did not change when he was re-elected as chairman in June of the same year after the elections held in April 1919. In view of the internal counterrevolution and the external threat posed by the intervention of the armed forces of Czechoslovakia , Romania and the SHS state , whose territorial demands were supported by the Entente Powers , a directory was formed in which, in addition to Kun, Commissioners Zsigmond Kunfi , Jenő Landler , József Pogány and Béla Vágó exercised real power in the Soviet Republic.
