Kiskunhalas [ kiʃkunhɒlɒʃ ] (German: Hallasch ) is a town in County Bács-Kiskun 130 km south of Budapest in Hungary .
history
The name of the city is composed of Kis ("small"), kun for the Cuman people and halas for the earlier abundance of fish ( hal - "fish"; halas - "with many fish") of the surrounding lakes. The origins of the city can be traced back to the eighth century. From 895 there were some settlements in today's urban area, the city was first mentioned in writing in 1347.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Reformation found its way into Kiskunhalas. Until 1754 the city was the center of the Kiskunság (Little Kumanei) region, when it lost this position due to the strong support of the population for Protestantism . A Roman Catholic church was built in 1770 and a Presbyterian church in 1823. In 1910 the city had 25,000 inhabitants for the first time.
Culture
The János Thorma Museum exhibits archaeological finds from the region and works by the artist of the same name.
