Sándor Rónai [ ˈʃaːndor ˈroːnɒ.i ] (born October 6, 1892 in Miskolc , Hungary , † September 28, 1965 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian communist politician and president.

Rónai, who belonged to the left wing of the Social Democratic Party , promoted cooperation with the Hungarian Communist Party of Mátyás Rákosi during the Second World War .

After the end of the Second World War he was from November 15, 1945 to June 11, 1949, he was Minister of Trade and Cooperation in the governments of Zoltán Tildy , Ferenc Nagy , Lajos Dinnyés and István Dobi . After the Social Democratic Party merged with the Communist Party to form the Workers' Party in June 1948, Rónai became a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee (ZK) . From June 11, 1949 to April 24, 1950 he was Foreign Trade Minister in the Second Cabinet of Dobi.

On April 26, 1950, after the arrest of Árpád Szakasits, Rónai became Chairman of the Presidential Council and thus President of Hungary. On August 14, 1952, he was replaced by Dobi in this position.

On August 18, 1952, he was elected President of the National Assembly (Országgyűlés). He held this office until November 5, 1962.

During the popular uprising in 1956 he supported the pro-Soviet position of János Kádár , who appointed him foreign trade minister in his cabinet on November 4, 1956 after the suppression of the popular uprising with the help of Soviet troops. He held this office until February 28, 1957.
