Szőny is a district of the Hungarian city ​​of Komárom . The history of Szőny goes back to the Stone Age .

The Szőny area was already settled in the Stone and Bronze Ages, as numerous prehistoric finds prove.

The Roman legionary camp Brigetio was here from 86 BC. Until the middle of the 5th century. Various Roman legions were stationed here, such as the Legio I Adiutrix , the Legio XI and the Legio XXX Ulpia Victrix , and took part in the Roman- Pannonian wars. As evidence of this, a Roman military diploma was found in the early 20th century, for example , which can be found today in the British Museum in London .

In 375 the Roman Emperor Valentinian I died in the legionary camp during negotiations with Germanic tribes.

The first written mention of the name Szőny comes from 1211 and was Sun ; In 1249 the name changed to Sceun .

In 1592 Szőny was destroyed by the Turks. In 1626 Ferdinand II and the Turkish Sultan concluded the Szony Peace Treaty here . The Catholic Church was built in 1777, the Protestant ten years later. During the revolution of 1848/1849 in the Austrian Empire , there were several major battles at the gates of the village. It was besieged and came under cannon fire . At the beginning of the 20th century, cannon balls were still found in the walls of the church. Fortifications to the castle were built around 1850 and 1870.

During the Second World War , Szőny made a strategic bomb target with his oil refinery .

In 1977 the area was incorporated into the city of Komárom .

Main road no.1 runs through Szőny . The place is connected to the railway lines from Komárom to Esztergom and to the Budapest South Railway Station .

Trivia

There are records of one of the first pairs of Siamese twins , Ilona and Judit Gófitz, who were born in Szőny in October 1701 and exhibited across Europe as a sensation. Alexander Pope wrote a poem about her.
