Schmidt is the largest district of the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Nideggen in Düren , Cologne Region .

Until 1971 Schmidt belonged as an independent municipality to the also dissolved Monschau district and this to the also dissolved administrative district of Aachen (see Aachen Law ).

location

Schmidt is located southwest of Nideggen on a high plateau , which is bordered by the foothills of the High Fens in the west and the Rur valley in the east. Schmidt is located in the Rureifel and in the Eifel National Park at about 480  m above sea level. NHN . The second largest German dam, the Rurtalsperre, borders on Schmidt .

Brück , Heimbach , Strauch (municipality of Simmerath ) and Vossenack (municipality of Hürtgenwald ) are located around the village .

Schmidt consists of Eschauel, the upper and lower village, Harscheidt, Froitscheidt, Kommerscheidt, Scheidtbaum, Klaus and the Gerstenhof.

history

The first traces of settlement go back to Roman times to around 100 AD. It is assumed that a Roman road connecting Monschau to Trier passed this point. The first written mention of the district Froitscheidt took place on May 12, 1351. A lease contract with Wilhelm Lunynk ( Jülich-Bergischer Chancellor ) is dated October 4, 1487 . In it Schmidt is still referred to as Dierscheidt.

During the Second World War , from October 1944 to February 1945, fierce fighting took place in the Schmidt area .

On January 1, 1972, Schmidt was incorporated into the new town of Nideggen. After the judgment of the Higher Administrative Court on August 4, 1972, Schmidt stayed with Nideggen, which was temporarily denied the city name .

School, kindergarten

In the village there is the two-group kindergarten St. Hubertus with 50 places, the family center & daycare center Rappelkiste , also with 50 places, and the Catholic primary school Schmidt. There are secondary schools in Nideggen, Düren , Vossenack, Monschau, Kreuzau and Simmerath.

The parish church

The parish church of St. Hubertus was badly damaged during the Battle of All Souls in 1944, as was the whole place. It was rebuilt after the war with the help of donations from smuggling profits with coffee . It is popularly known as the smuggler's church of St. Mokka .

Schmidt can be reached via the state roads 246 and 218 . From Brück, Heimbach and Kalltal towards Vossenack these serpentines lead up to the village. The L 246 as the main road divides the place in places.

Buses of the Dürener Kreisbahn (DKB, line 210) and the DB Bahn Rheinlandbus ( BVR , line 81) pass through the town. "Mäxchen" is the name of a bus on the Düren district railway, it runs on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays during the season.

At the Rursee, below Schmidt, is the Eschauel landing stage for the Rursee shipping company .

From 1922 to 1926 the Eifelrennen ran through the town.

The place has changed from an agricultural community to a tourist destination . Hotels and guest houses offer overnight accommodation. On the outskirts is the Rursee youth center with overnight and conference facilities for around 180 people.

Schmidt has the only lido on the main lake of the Rursee in the Düren district, the sunny Eschauel beach . The road there drops from the center of the village to the path leading along the lakeshore for just under 1.5 km by about 140 m.

An extensive, well-marked network of trails is ideal for hikers and cyclists. The Schöne Aussicht viewpoint high above the Rursee is well known.

Since 1968, the Schmidt Wildlife Park has shown around 250 animals on an area of ​​around 23 hectares. Mainly red deer , fallow deer , wild boar and European mouflons can be seen there.
