Abenden (pronounced AA -benden) is a village in the city of Nideggen in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia . It lies in the valley of the Rur in the Eifel National Park in the Rureifel .

Location, place name

The name of the place does not go back to the term "evening", but to "An den Benden ", which means something like: "Beautiful, lush meadows". Evenings lies between two villages through which the Rur also flows. Brück is to the north and Blens to the south . It is more likely that today's place name goes back to the term “Aubenden”. An "Au" is a "meadow by the river". It is well known that particularly lush grass grows in meadows by the river because of the constant moisture. Already in the time of the Celts river meadows were reserved exclusively for livestock farming. Because of the risk of flooding, floodplains were therefore not allowed to be plowed or built on more than 2000 years ago.

General

Evenings there is not only the Rur flowing through it, but also the Mühlbach . It runs openly - right next to the village road from its source above the village - to the Rur. Evenings, located on the edge of the Eifel National Park, is a popular destination in this region. It is worth mentioning the Romanesque church, which is illuminated at night. Evenings has a festival hall that is used for many cultural events. The harvest festival is traditionally celebrated. Solemnly decorated floats are accompanied by the villagers in traditional costume.

history

On February 28, 1945, the US 47th Infantry Regiment of the 9th US Infantry Division crossed the Rur and occupied evenings.

In the late 1960s / early 1970s evenings became a popular tourist destination. In addition to the construction of the swimming pool and a hall in which some festivals are celebrated, dance groups and a music band were created. A few years later a barbecue hut was built, and a second one with a toilet facility has now been built.

On January 1, 1972, evenings were incorporated into the new town of Nideggen. After the judgment of the Higher Administrative Court on August 4, 1972, Abenden stayed with Nideggen, which was temporarily denied the city name .

In 2003 a beach volleyball facility was built on the site of the old mini golf course, which was next to the swimming pool.

traffic

There is no main road through the town itself. The L 249 leads over a bridge past the village, but there is a driveway on both sides of the village after evenings. There is a large car park in the evenings.

Station at the Rurtalbahn

Evenings can be reached with the Düren – Heimbach railway line . Trains in the direction of Düren and Heimbach (Eifel) leave every hour . The Abenden stop is one of the few stations that did not have to be rebuilt after being taken over by the Bundesbahn, but only had to be renovated.

tourism

  • Evenings are visited by numerous tourists, especially on Sundays and public holidays. These use the distinctive hiking trails along the Rur to Blens or Brück.
  • In the evenings there is a campsite and two barbecue huts directly on the Rur.
  • There is an outdoor swimming pool in the village.

Buildings

The chapel in evenings was completed in 1865 and is dedicated to the patron saint St. Martinus . It is a three-aisled quarry stone building in neo-Gothic style with a 5/8 choir and a two-bay nave with groined vaults and narrow spaces on the sides of both bays. The cathedral glass windows are extensively decorated with sacred motifs.
