Berg-Thuir is a district of the city of Nideggen in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The district consists of the two villages Berg and Thuir [ tyːɐ̯ ].

location

Berg and Thuir are on the edge of the Zülpicher Börde in the middle of the Devonian shell limestone peaks with an extremely rare flora .

history

The area is an ancient settlement area. In the mid-1950s, archaeologists uncovered a large Roman estate south of Berg . Another nine farms were found on Rödelsberg . Between 100 and 400 AD, ore mining was carried out in the nearby bathing forest. The Celts were already mining here before the Romans came. The Romans dug for brown iron stone and other stones containing metal.

On the ridge between the mountains and Thuir, the Breidel , were Frankish graves exposed.

According to local research, it is said to have been on the Rödelsberg in 56 BC. Have given a winter camp of Julius Caesar .

In the Middle Ages , Berg belonged to the forest counties, which passed to the Counts of Jülich through marriage in 1177 . With Thuir it later belonged to the subordinate Thum .
