Vossenack is a North Rhine-Westphalian town in the municipality of Hürtgenwald in Düren in Region of Cologne .

location

Hürtgenwald lies on the edge of the Eifel National Park and belongs to the German-Belgian nature park Hohes Venn-Eifel and the Rureifel . The place is on a ridge above the Kall valley . On the panoramic street between Schmidt and Vossenack, which runs through the Kalltal, formerly were Bergrennen driven with motor vehicles.

From Vossenack you can see the Siebengebirge and Cologne Cathedral in good weather . The Cologne bay is one in good weather "feet".

The climate in Vossenack is temperate. The winters are relatively mild and the summers are usually only moderately warm or cool, due to the proximity to the Atlantic and the North Sea. history

In 1944, around 12,000 soldiers died in the battle in the Hürtgenwald during World War II . The Vossenack war cemetery , the Hürtgen war cemetery and the “ Hürtgenwald 1944 and at peace ” museum in Vossenack are a reminder of this.

Reorganization

Until 1971 Vossenack belonged as an independent municipality to the dissolved Monschau district and this to the also dissolved administrative district of Aachen (see Aachen Law ). On January 1, 1972, it was incorporated into Hürtgenwald.

traffic

The town center is located off the B 399 , which leads from Düren to Monschau to the Belgian border and brings long-distance traffic to the region.

Rurtalbus GmbH bus lines in the Aachen transport association run from Düren to Vossenack (line 286), from Vossenack to Simmerath (line 86) and as an express bus from Düren via Vossenack to Simmerath (line SB 86).

tourism

The Hürtgenwald is a recreation area and a "national park community". The place was recognized, together with Simonskall , on April 1, 2002 as a resort by the district government .

There are around 70 km of paved hiking trails , an outdoor pool and a barbecue hut on site, as well as hotels of all categories. In July 2015, a bike park was opened that is operated by the Nordeifel Gravity Association. It leads downhill to Simonskall.

Monastery, high school, boarding school

The Cologne Franciscan Province of the Three Kings built a monastery in 1966/67 next to the military cemetery in the forest. After the unification of the four German Franciscan provinces in 2010, the German Franciscan Province of St. Elisabeth continues to run the coeducational high school and a boarding school for boys , at which the artist P. Laurentius Ulrich taught English OFM .

At the beginning there were 26 brothers in the monastery, in 2019 only six brothers. The school has been headed by Peter Cordes since February 2018. One Franciscan belongs to the teaching staff, another heads the boarding school.

Our village has a future

  • In 2006, Vossenack won a bronze medal at the state level in the competition Our Village Future . In addition, the place received a special award for the exemplary nature conservation work with a focus on forest and youth work .
  • In the same competition, Vossenack won a gold medal in 2011 at the district level and represents the Düren district at the state level in 2012.
  • In 2012 Vossenack won the gold medal at the state level and thus takes part in the 2013 national competition. The award was given by the Environment Minister of NRW, Johannes Remmel, on October 27, 2012 in Simmerath.
  • Vossenack was awarded the bronze medal in the 2013 national competition.
  • Vossenack was awarded the gold medal in the 2014 district competition.
  • Together with Simonskall and Raffelsbrand, the place received a silver medal at state level in 2018.

Others

  • Stawag ( Stadtwerke Aachen AG) built a wood pellet plant on the outskirts of Vossenack for 15 million euros . Since spring 2007, 40,000 t of pellets and wood chips have been produced there every year. The plant was sold in February 2010 to DEMMEL Bioenergie GmbH from Wolnzach in Bavaria. After another sale and renovation, both companies no longer exist in Vossenack. Since the beginning of 2014, the new operator of the pellet plant has been the Grünwald-based Green Values ​​Energie GmbH.
  • In the Germeter district there was the Reichsausbildunglager II of the Hitler Youth during the National Socialist era .
