Neighboring places are Rollesbroich (municipality of Simmerath ), Vossenack and Raffelsbrand . Simonskall is located in the deeply cut Kall valley - about one kilometer away from the federal highway 399 . A serpentine leads from Vossenack into the Kall valley .

history

On July 3, 1608, the foundation stone for Simonskall was laid. This is evidenced by a document from the Duke of Jülich , which approved the Schobinger brothers to build a glassworks and soap factory in the “op der callen” area.

The place name "Simonskall" goes back to the smelter Simon Kremer. The Kremer-Hof, the so-called castle, was built in 1643. The size was 30 × 35 meters. Kremer operated an ironworks in Zweifallshammer 7 km away . One of the owners of the castle was Franz Scholl from Schmidt . The hut was closed in 1816.

The " Junkerhaus ", a listed building, has been preserved directly on the Kall , a semi-detached house with a defensive tower with loopholes. This is the oldest part of Simonskall and was built around 1608. It is called "Junker House" after its last owner, Otto Junker.

The small Marienkapelle stands above the Kremer-Hof. It was only built in 1934/1935 and is now a popular location for weddings.

The municipality of Vossenack with the district Simonskall belonged to the district of Monschau until December 31, 1971 . As part of the local reorganization ( Aachen Law ), the municipality of Hürtgenwald was created in its current size on January 1, 1972.

Experiment Kalltalgemeinschaft

One of the most interesting events in the community of Hürtgenwald, both in terms of local history and in terms of literature and art history, was the stay and work of several young Cologne artists in Simonskall from 1919 to 1921. Some of them are among the most important today Representatives of the constructivist style in Germany, their works are in many museums around the world. This group, which called itself the Kall valley community after the river of the same name, was essentially the art historian and publicist Carl Oskar Jatho , his wife Käthe Jatho-Zimmermann , writer, the painter and graphic artist Franz Wilhelm Seiwert and the painter and set designer from Leipzig Franz Nitsche .

The artists who were temporarily staying in Simonskall in the Junkerhaus at the time were mainly recruited from the group of later Cologne progressives, whose artistic work was dominated by the turn to the constructivist style trend of the 1920s. Well-known artist personalities such as Otto Freundlich , Heinrich Hoerle , Angelika Hoerle , Anton Räderscheidt , Marta Hegemann and Ret Marut , alias B. Traven with Irene Mermet , stayed in Simonskall .

In addition to the production of numerous pictures, woodcuts and sculptures, almost all of which came from Seiwert, the Kalltal community was also involved in the production and publication of literary works during their stay in the Eifel. Texts illustrated graphically: a total of eight works that have found their way into the literary and art history of modernism in the Rhineland under the name "Kalltalpresse, Druckschriften der Kalltal-Gemeinschaft". Volume 4 - Franz Wilhelm Seiwert's “Welt zum Staunen” was produced in an edition of 100 copies in Simonskall on a hand press.

tourism

Simonskall has been a recognized resort since 2002 and is part of the Vossenack Simonskall e. V. organized. The owner of the Landhotel Kallbach took third place in the 2017 Founders Prize in North Rhine-Westphalia. The house of the guest is housed in the Junkerhaus as a tourist information center, as well as the memorial exhibitions “Greyhounds call for peace” and “The Kalltal Community” (1919–1921). The "Hürtgenwald 1944 and in Peace" museum is located in Vossenack.

There are several hotels and pensions available for holiday guests. An extensive network of hiking trails, the nearby Kalltalsperre and much more are available for guests looking for peace and quiet. The historical hiking trail “In the footsteps of charcoal burners, miners and smelterers” reveals the industrial and settlement history of the Kall valley with the Mestrenger mill and the Kremer mill .

Rigorous mill

A medical bunker of the west wall of the Regelbau 32 type with an attached house can also be visited . This was not used to camouflage the bunker, as is often claimed, but was only built in the 1950s.

There is also an almost 9 km long bunker hiking trail on which you can visit bunkers of various standard construction types. The bunkers are well signposted. You should expect three hours for the entire route.

The Hürtgenwald Mountain Bike Park was opened in 2015 between Vossenack and Simonskall.
