Kleinhau is a district of the municipality Hürtgenwald in the district of Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia .

Kleinhau is the administrative seat of the municipality of Hürtgenwald. The town hall is also located there .

location

The place is in the Eifel National Park in the Rureifel and in the North Eifel Nature Park in the Eifel . Neighboring towns are Hürtgen , Großhau , Brandenberg and Schafberg . From Kleinhau there is a wide view of the Cologne Bay and the Zülpich Börde .

The Wehebachtalsperre is located northwest of Kleinhau . The old road from Kleinhau to Schevenhütte was interrupted by the damming of the dam, but is still there and can in principle be used as a hiking trail when the water level is low.

history

Archaeological finds suggest the first settlement in the Neolithic between 3000 and 1800 BC. The place is referred to in the first records from around 1500 as auf dem Hau .

In the Second World War , Kleinhau was almost completely destroyed in the fighting in the Hürtgen Forest (including the All Souls' Battle ).

Reorganization

On July 1, 1969, the formerly independent municipalities of Bergstein, Brandenberg, Gey, Großhau, Hürtgen, Kleinhau and Straß, administered in the Straß-Bergstein District Association, voluntarily merged to form the municipality of Hürtgenwald. As part of the municipal reorganization ( Aachen law ), the municipality of Hürtgenwald was created in its current size through the incorporation of Vossenack on January 1, 1972.

education

There is a two-group kindergarten in the village. The secondary school and the secondary school are located in the school center near the town hall .

economy

The charcoal industry was an important line of business in Kleinhau in the 16th and 17th centuries. Every year 1,000 and more carts of charcoal were transported to the surrounding ironworks . In the valley of the Red and White woe were iron ore and shale dismantled. Mining and smelting existed around Kleinhau as early as Roman times.

Today, regional supermarkets have opened in a small industrial area on the outskirts.

Federal highway 399 runs through the center of the town . In the village, the road branches off to Brandenberg, Bergstein and Zerkall . Buses of the Busverkehr Rheinland GmbH (BVR) run through the town with line 286.

Motocross track in Kleinhau
  • On the outskirts in the direction of Brandenberg there is a 1,800 m long nature motocross course , on which international championships are held twice a year. The MSC Kleinhau club is responsible for the route .
  • The district's own Finkenheide youth campground was opened on July 2nd, 1988. It is on the road to the Wehebachtalsperre .
  • There is a chapel in the village, the Hürtgenwald Memorial Chapel .
  • The old Marienplatz was recently renovated.
