Bergstein: Monument to Sürthgens Mossel

Bergstein in the Eifel is a district of the municipality of Hürtgenwald in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Düren . It has about 900 inhabitants in the Eifel National Park .

Geographical location

Bergstein is located in the Rureifel , part of the northern Eifel , in the Hohes Venn-Eifel nature park ; The Eifel National Park spreads out about 1.5 km to the southeast . The village is located between the Hürtgenwald districts of Brandenberg in the northwest and Zerkall in the east-southeast. The Kall flows a little south past the village, which flows into the Rur at Zerkall at a height of about 175  m ; the latter then runs a little north of Bergstein through the Obermaubach reservoir . To the east of the village rises above the Kall and Rurtal valleys the castle hill ( 400.8  m above sea  level ), on which the castle Berenstein once stood; their stones were used to build the nearby Nideggen Castle. The Krawutschketurm observation tower is currently on the mountain .

history

Bergstein was incorporated into the new municipality of Hürtgenwald on July 1, 1969. It was previously part of the Straß-Bergstein office.

Site and facilities

The parish church of the Holy Moorish Martyrs dates from the Middle Ages . The monument to Sürthgens Mossel is located on the village square . The place has a primary school. Forum Berinsteyn is the name of the local community center , a converted former bank branch. West of Bergstein is the glider airfield of the Segelsportverein Düren e. V. , where the planes are pulled into the air with a winch .

traffic

The winding state road  11 ( Brandenberg –Bergstein– Zerkall ) leads through Bergstein and south past the Burgberg , from which the Burgstrasse branches off in the village in the direction of the Burgberg.
