Franciscan monastery Vossenack
The Franciscan monastery in Vossenack (municipality of Hürtgenwald in the Düren district ) is a Roman Catholic monastery of the Franciscan order . The monastery includes the co-educational Franziskus Gymnasium and the Franziskus boarding school for boys. It is part of the German Franciscan Province of St. Elisabeth , which is also a partner in the sponsoring association of high school and boarding school. The novitiate of the Cologne Franciscan Province was located in Vossenack for a few years .
The monastery with church , high school and boarding school was built in 1966/67 ( laying of the foundation stone on June 29, 1966) by the then Cologne Franciscan Province of the Three Kings ( Colonia ) as a successor to the Exaten College near Roermond and inaugurated on October 8, 1967 . The Franciscans deliberately chose the location in Vossenack in the immediate vicinity of the Vossenack war cemetery as a “place of life and education” because of its location in the Hürtgen Forest, where tens of thousands of people were killed in the battle in the Hürtgen Forest in the winter of 1944/45 . To support schools and boarding schools, the Cologne Franciscan Province founded the "Franziskus-Stiftung", which still exists today. Youth Work of the Franciscans ”.
The headmaster is Father Peter Schorr. He will be replaced by Peter Cordes on February 5, 2018. Dirk Sieven will be its representative. Seven Franciscans still live in the monastery. The school has 580 students. Status: 2016
A Way of the Cross , created by Father Laurentius Ulrich Englisch , has been hanging in the monastery church since 2012 and was previously shown in Kalterherberg and Essen . The Beuys student, Father Laurentius, lives in the Vossenack monastery and worked there as a teacher and art educator.
