history

The Cologne architect Toni Wichterich, born in 1928, was a front-line fighter in the Hürtgen Forest during World War II . After his release from American captivity , he built a weekend house in Schafberg , above Straß, in 1958 . At village events he was asked if he could plan a picture stick for Straß. This then became a chapel.

The diocese of Aachen approved the planning, but did not add any funds. So the whole project had to be created with little own resources of the church or in own contribution .

Building

The current structure was built in 1964. The new sandstone chapel is dedicated to St. Dedicated to Donatus . The floor plan has the shape of a hexagon . The flat roof of the chapel room is surmounted by a tower with a pyramid roof. The roof and the slate of the turret donated the Cologne master roofer Willi Zilken, whose father came from Straß. Another donor was the Stolberger zinc works, which donated the stones. A building contractor from Untermaubach built the church for a god's wage. The altar and the pews donated Toni Wichterich.

The foundations and floor slab were cast from concrete . The circular masonry consists of embossed red Eifel sandstone . The ring beam was made of reinforced concrete, the roof structure of wood . The roof was covered with thermal insulation and flat roof sealing. The little tower with formwork was clad with Eifel slate . Stone slabs were laid on the floor slab. The walls were glazed with concrete tracery stones, which made natural room lighting possible. The entrance door is made of oak .

inner space

Inside is a wooden sculpture of St. Donatus from the 12th or 13th century. The altar plate is also made of Eifel sandstone. The knee benches are made of beech wood .
