Location of fire in Aachen

Brand is a district of Aachen in the Aachen city region and has around 18,000 inhabitants. Brand is located in the southeast of Aachen and borders the districts of Kornelimünster , Forst, Oberforstbach and Eilendorf as well as the city of Stolberg (Rhld.) .

Until the regional reform, which came into effect on January 1, 1972, Brand was an independent municipality in what was then the Aachen district . Today's Brand District consists of the districts of Brand, Freund , Niederforstbach, Brander Feld, Rollef and Krauthausen . The political representation of the citizens of Brander is the district assembly Aachen-Brand, which consists of 13 members. Since the last local election on May 25, 2014, four parties have been represented in the Aachen Brand district council: CDU 6 mandates, SPD 4 mandates, Greens 2 mandates, FDP 1 mandate. The chairman of the district council and district mayor is Peter Tillmanns, who was elected as Herbert Henn's successor at the constituent meeting of the district council on June 11, 2014.

The highest point of Brands is the so-called Brander Wall, a noise protection wall on the A 44 motorway, which is 270.90 m above sea level. NN lies.

Coat of arms and symbols

Brander Stier, sculpture by Karl-Henning Seemann

The Brander coat of arms is horizontally divided into two parts and shows the Kornelius horn in the upper part as a symbol of the former affiliation to the former Reich Abbey of Kornelimünster . In the lower part it shows a burning mountain of three . Here the three hills symbolize the three districts of Brands Freund, Brand and Niederforstbach, each of which is located on a small hill. The fire stands for the place name Brand , but its etymological origin has not been conclusively clarified.

The symbol of the Brand district is the Brander bull , whose bronze statue is on the market square. It is probably derived from the Kornelius horn in the coat of arms and at the same time symbolizes the alleged stubbornness of the residents of Brand.

Brandy Heath

The English Count de Rice, whose personal details are unknown, bought the treeless site of Brander Heide (today's area around Nordstrasse and Erberichshofstrasse to Eilendorferstrasse) from the abbot of Kornelimünster on August 30, 1780, with an area of more than 300 acres between the villages Brand, Rollef and Freund with Gut Neuenhof, Krummerrück and Hebscheider Hof, in order to set up several houses and a racecourse there. In 1789 the count went bankrupt with his companies and the site was foreclosed. Later the area went back to the community of Brand, which then had a racecourse with grandstands etc. built. In July 1821 the probably oldest modern horse race in the English style was held there on the occasion of a planned visit by King Friedrich Wilhelm III. aligned.

Sculpture "With child and cone" by Bonifatius Stirnberg

In the 19th century the horse races enjoyed great popularity here, organized around 1830 by the industrialist James Cockerill based on the English model and expanded further from 1870 by his grandchildren and respected gentlemen riders Otto and Henry Suermondt and as the nucleus of the later Aachen-Laurensberger racing club served. The construction of the Vennbahn in 1883 and the Brand Railway Station, which opened in 1885 and near which the main grandstand of the horse-drawn tram ran, enabled increased spectator flows from the wider area. Not only in German equestrian sport, but also internationally, the Brander Heide became known in relevant horse racing circles as far as Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris and London. In addition to their spa stay and playing fun in Aachen, both the aristocratic and “well-heeled” bourgeois society attended the races, as did the simple Aachen population. The Brander “national anthem” “ Vür fahre met de Modder noh dr Brand ” can also be understood in connection with these horse races, which are attended by many Aacheners. The bronze sculpture With Child and Cone by Bonifatius Stirnberg is a reminder of those old times in front of Sparkasse Trierer Straße.

Despite international advertising, there were financial bottlenecks and the equestrian events were discontinued by the Aachen racing club after the last race in 1896 , but from 1923 onwards by the Aachen-Laurensberger racing club founded in 1898 in the Soers . Instead, the extensive area in Brand now served as a take-off and landing site for flight demonstrations of the first propeller planes. In the beginning it was primarily the Aachen aviation pioneer and aircraft designer Erich Lochner who amazed the audience with his performances in 1910/11. Later, the Aachener Verein für Luftschifffahrt , which was founded in 1911 and which included not only private individuals but also important scientists from RWTH Aachen University , officers, and respected business people and entrepreneurs, wanted to lease the site for its activities and had maintenance and assembly halls built for this purpose. In the period that followed, numerous flight days with international participation took place here until 1913. Despite these initial successes, the activities on the airfield had to be discontinued because the association had miscalculated and overindebted and even a call by the incumbent Mayor Veltman for a "national flight donation" could not change anything.
