In 814 Benedikt von Aniane (750–821) founded the Kornelimünster monastery on the river Inde with Emperor Ludwig the Pious , successor of Charlemagne , as an advisor . The monastery was initially known as the Redeemer Monastery on the Inde , Inda for short .

In the middle of the 9th century the monastery became imperial and received large holdings of land and the so-called biblical or Salvator sanctuaries: the apron, the handkerchief and the shroud of the Lord.

In 875 half of the shroud was exchanged for a head relic of the pope martyr Cornelius († 253). The monastery was then called Sancti Cornelii ad Indam , later Kornelimünster . Today the official title is Abbey of the Holy Abbot Benedict of Aniane and Pope Cornelius .

In 1500 the Imperial Prince Abbey of Kornelimünster became part of the Lower Rhine-Westphalian Empire .

In 1802 the Kornelimünster area fell to France. The imperial abbey , like other monasteries in the French-occupied Rhineland, was abolished in the same year with a decree of the French government on secularization and the monks had to leave the monastery. Kornelimünster became a mairie in the canton of Burtscheid . 1815 fell Kornelimünster of Prussia and was a mayor part of the district of Aachen in the administrative district of Aachen . In 1906 Benedictines came again to Kornelimünster and founded the New Benedictine Abbey Kornelimünster . The old abbey church of St. Kornelius is now the parish church of the village. The old abbey buildings are owned by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , which operates the institution of art from North Rhine-Westphalia there . Various sculptures are set up outside.

During the Second World War , the fighting on the Western Front reached the south of Aachen in autumn 1944. On September 14, 1944, US units captured Kornelimünster without causing any major damage. At the end of September the US Army set up the first court (“summary court”) on German territory in Kornelimünster.

In 1971 Kornelimünster and Breinig, Mulartshütte , Roetgen , Venwegen and Walheim pleaded for the formation of a municipality in Münsterland. But the Kornelimünster area was divided up on January 1, 1972 for reasons of settlement geography as follows: Kornelimünster / Walheim became a district of Aachen and Breinig and Venwegen went to Stolberg . The municipality of Roetgen was formed from Mulartshütte, Rott and Roetgen, with 8000 inhabitants the smallest municipality in the new district of Aachen .

After the Second World War, refugees and the reconstruction of the Rhenish-Westphalian Technical University in the other districts saw high growth in parish members, a new Protestant parish center was built in Kornelimünster in 1965 (part of Aachen since 1972) Increase in the number of parishioners, rebuilt in 1997 and built as a new church. A church window by the local artist Janet Brooks Gerloff has been decorating the church on Schleckheimer Strasse since the 1st of Advent 2009, which was made by the Derix glass studio in Taunusstein .
  • Opposite the communal cemetery is the Kornelimünster Jewish cemetery .

Historical fair in Kornelimünster

Historical fair

A historical fair has been held in the Kornelimünster since 1976 every year over Corpus Christi from Wednesday to Sunday. The fair includes over 100 stalls and nostalgic rides, jugglers, street musicians, old handicrafts and stalls offering food and drinks adapted to the occasion.

The visitors come from Germany and the Dutch and Belgian border areas. The Roncalli Circus has been organizing the event since 2002 .

Open air carnival session

Open air market session

Since 1977 there has been an open-air meeting of the Orjenal Monsters Jonge on the Korneliusmarkt every year on Carnival Saturday, with a large participation of the mostly costumed population. Carnival clubs from the region appear here for free in all weathers.

On the Wednesday before the carnival, the carnivalists from Kornelimünster receive the ship of fools "Blauwe Sjuut" from the neighboring Dutch town of Heerlen .

Christmas Market

On the 1st weekend in Advent, a Christmas market is traditionally organized by the local associations in the middle of the historic town center.

Handicrafts and decorative items are offered for sale. Attractive culinary offers invite you to linger.

The picturesque backdrop of the town of Kornelimünster, which belongs to the city of Aachen about ten kilometers away, is transformed every year on Corpus Christi from Wednesday to Sunday into the setting for the historical fair.

Nature reserve

The Klauserwäldchen / Frankenwäldchen nature reserve has been a nature reserve since 1964. It is one of the 12 designated nature reserves of the city of Aachen and is the oldest in Aachen. The following plants can be found here, among others: orchids, ringelkraut, anemones, larkspur and woodruff.

Eifelsteig

The 313 km long Eifelsteig hiking trail starts in Aachen-Kornelimünster. It leads across the Eifel and ends in the Roman imperial city of Trier. The partner path of the Eifelsteig, the Inderoute, is suitable for starting the Eifelsteig hike.

Vennbahn

The former railway line that connected Aachen with Luxembourg for over 100 years is now a popular cycle route. The 125 km long Vennbahnradweg is one of the longest railway cycle paths in Europe. The euregional cycle route leads through Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Economy and Infrastructure

Administrative matters

Up until December 31, 2005, the Central Monitoring Center (CNS) was located in Kornelimünster . 60 years after the end of the Second World War and 50 years after its integration into the Federal Archives , this location was closed as planned.

Culture and sights

In the center of the village is St. Kornelius , a five-aisled church in Gothic style . It was originally the monastery church of the Imperial Abbey of Kornelimünster and, thanks to the relics of Christ stored in it, it became the destination of numerous pilgrimages, especially during the Kornelimünster pilgrimage, which takes place every seven years .

To the west of the church are the former abbey buildings as a three-wing complex in the Maasland Baroque style. They house the Kunsthaus Nordrhein-Westfalen Kornelimünster . Here an insight into the present and future of the art scene in North Rhine-Westphalia is offered. Current developments in art are shown in changing exhibitions.
