Emil Pauls, ca.1890

Emil Pauls (born December 5, 1840 in Kornelimünster , Aachen , † August 3, 1911 in Düsseldorf ) was a Rhenish pharmacist and local researcher .

Life

Emil Pauls, son of the pharmacist Josef Pauls and his wife Amalia Moreau, was the oldest of eight children. He attended elementary school in Kornelimünster and then, on the advice of his uncle , who was then dean of Eupen and later Paul Pauls from Aachen, he went to the collegiate school in Aachen, which he left in 1856 with an excellent diploma. At his father's request , he pursued a career as a pharmacist and entered his father's business as an apprentice . From 1864 he began his pharmaceutical studies at the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelm University in Bonn , which he graduated in 1865 as a "first class pharmacist". In 1869 he took over his father's pharmacy in Kornelimünster. From 1860 he published articles on chess , chemistry and pharmaceutical science . From 1873 he dealt with the history of his homeland. In 1879 he joined the newly founded Aachen History Association . There he wrote numerous articles for his magazine. In 1881 he was one of the founding members of the Society for Rhenish History . In 1884 he moved to Bedburg as a pensioner in order to devote himself more intensively to his historical studies. In 1893 he moved to Düsseldorf, the seat of the State Archives , to intensify his research there. He became a member (1897–1900) of the Düsseldorfer Geschichtsverein and worked for the Düsseldorfer Nachrichten (1895–1905) and the Düsseldorfer Generalanzeiger (1898–1911). On the occasion of his 25th anniversary, the Aachen History Association appointed him an honorary member on October 20, 1904 . After his unexpected death in 1911, he left an extensive collection and numerous finished, but as yet unpublished articles. His son, the lawyer Dr. August Pauls, published this in collaboration with Aachen historians even after his death.
