history

The area of Bildchen originally belonged to the Duchy of Limburg , which was conquered by the French revolutionary troops in 1792. At the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Bildchen became part of the Prussian Moresnet community, now Neu-Moresnet , in the Eupen district . By the Versailles Treaty of 1919, Preußisch Moresnet was awarded to Belgium . As part of border corrections, Bildchen came back to Germany in 1922 and was incorporated into the city of Aachen together with other returned areas of the former Eupen district . After the Second World War , Bildchen and other areas came under Belgian administration in 1949 , but were returned to Germany in 1958.

A plaque from the Ways Against Forgetting project , which was attached to the formerly listed building at Lütticher Straße 599 and was temporarily removed because of its dilapidation, commemorates Bildchen's role before and during World War II . The inscription reads:

“In the years 1933–1944, the border near Aachen and the surrounding area became the scene of inhumane escape scenes. People were pushed back and forth, imprisoned, robbed, robbed and beaten. Help for money to escape flourished as a profitable business. They were also often given anonymous humanity by border residents. They gave spontaneous and organized help to refugees. On May 10, 1940, German troops invaded Belgium and brought immeasurable suffering to the people of our neighboring country. "

After the Schengen Agreement came into force in 1995, the Aachen-Bildchen border crossing was abolished.

Townscape

Bildchen has the shape of a street village and extends about two kilometers along Lütticher Straße. To the south there are farms with livestock farming. Some of the buildings are entered in the list of monuments of the city of Aachen . The manor house at Lütticher Straße 599, which dates back to 1752, was removed from the list of monuments in 2008 because of its dilapidated condition.

At the southern end of the village is a soccer field that is used by the club FC Cro Sokoli Aachen , which plays in the Aachen regional league .

To the west of Lütticher Straße between Bildchen and the Belgian border lies the Bildchen nature reserve , an approximately 5- hectare nature reserve with a birch break forest , Großseggenried and wet meadow . Opposite it are the remains of several old bunkers from 1938, which were part of the west wall , scattered along the roadside or in the nearby forest .
