geography

Neu-Moresnet lies between the villages Kelmis and Hergenrath, which also belong to the municipality of Kelmis, and borders Germany in the northeast .

history

Neu-Moresnet emerged in 1920 from the part of Moresnet (Prussian Moresnet) that belonged to Germany until 1919. After the fall of Napoleon , the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Kingdom of Prussia could not fully agree on who the Moresneter region should fall to. So it came about that the area was initially divided into three parts. The western part was assigned to the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and finally belonged to the Kingdom of Belgium from 1830 , while the southern and eastern parts were assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia (from 1871 German Empire ). A 3.4 km² large area in the middle, on the other hand, on whose affiliation the two powers could not agree due to the abundant natural resources, was declared neutral territory , the so-called Neutral Moresnet . Only with the entry into force of the Versailles Treaty did Germany recognize the full sovereignty of Belgium over Neutral Moresnet. Neutral Moresnet became Kelmis and Prussian Moresnet became Neu Moresnet. On January 1, 1977, the initially independent municipality of Neu-Moresnet joined the municipality of Hergenrath in the course of the municipality merger to form the Kelmis municipality. Today's Kelmis community was created.

language

In addition to the standard German taught at school and used in the community , the population speaks the regional Platdiets , a Limburg dialect.
