As a result of the incorporation into the city of Aachen , i.e. the incorporation of formerly independent communities or other parts of the area, the territory of the city of Aachen grew considerably from the end of the 19th century and in the course of the 20th century.

The Aachener Reich , whose area was about 9,000 hectares, comprised from the Middle Ages until the end of the 18th century other than the actual urban area of the old city of Aachen , the of the city walls was surrounded, and an out of the wall area. In addition to the so-called bell sound in the immediate vicinity of the city wall, this included seven quarters. Other territories that were at least partially in what is now Aachen's urban area were the Burtscheid Imperial Abbey , the Kornelimünster Imperial Abbey and the Office Schönforst and Herrschaft Heyden areas belonging to the Duchy of Jülich .

With the invasion of the French in 1792 and the annexation of the Rhineland to Prussia in 1815, the political structure of the region changed. Aachen first became a mairie and then a mayor's office . The municipalities of Laurensberg (Berger Quartier, Orsbacher Quartier, Vaalser Quartier and Soerser Quartier), Haaren (Haarener Quartier), Würselen (Würselener Quartier), and Weiden (Weidener Quartier) emerged from the former quarters of the Aachen Empire . The imperial abbeys were dissolved, the city of Burtscheid and the villages of Brand , Eilendorf , Kornelimünster and Walheim , which were formerly part of the imperial abbey of Kornelimünster , became independent political communities. The municipality of Forst emerged from the office of Schönforst , and part of the Heyden rulership became the municipality of Richterich .

The first expansions of the urban area of Aachen were made to the southeast by incorporating the city of Burtscheid in 1897 and the municipality of Forst in 1906. As a result of border corrections between the German Empire and the Kingdom of Belgium , areas of East Belgium were added in 1922 , which had previously belonged to the Eupen district, which was dissolved in 1921 to Aachen. In 1968, parts of the community of Brand were incorporated as part of a consolidation . The largest expansion of the urban area was the last, on January 1, 1972, incorporation of seven surrounding municipalities in accordance with the Aachen Law of 1971 . It increased the area of the urban area to about three times and the population by about 35%. The urban area of Aachen grew from 3,056 hectares before the first incorporation to 16,082.9 hectares in 1998, which means it has more than quintupled. Changes due to minor limit corrections and new measurements are also taken into account.

Even if the incorporated areas were politically absorbed in the city of Aachen, the names of the corresponding territories are still preserved in the form of the districts of Aachen . During the incorporation of 1972, the greatly enlarged urban area was divided into districts of Aachen . Since then, the previous urban area has essentially formed the Aachen-Mitte district . Five of the seven newly incorporated municipalities became their own municipal districts, Kornelimünster and Walheim were combined into a common urban district.
