history

Good Hebscheid
The Lichtenbuscher Church

The place did not develop in its present form until the 20th century along the current course of Raerener Straße, which originally began before the construction of the motorway at Grüne Eiche and is an extension of this street of the same name. Since the late Middle Ages, only agricultural farms have existed here, including the knightly fief of Gut Hebscheid . The Schellartshof and the Kohlshof, which today houses a riding therapy center, were added later.

Up until the 1980s there were so-called coffee trips to Lichtenbusch, where large crowds of people were taken by bus (mostly from the Ruhr area ) in order to be able to buy cheap cigarettes or coffee in Belgian border shops.

In 1999 and 2000 a new settlement for young families was built on the German side. It comprises 45 terraced houses, 14 semi-detached houses and a community house. The settlement was initiated by the " Karl Kübel Foundation for Children and Family ". The settlement on the newly created Lichtenbuscher Weg was the foundation's 100th settlement. The non-profit building dfh-Siedlungsbau GmbH, a subsidiary of the foundation, went bankrupt while the settlement was being built. The land was provided by the city of Aachen at a reasonable price and the houses were built in an organized and professionally supported group work. The community house is the community property of the settlers and is operated by an association.

language

In addition to the standard German taught in school and used in the community, some of the population still speaks the traditional dialect of the region, which has Limburg and Ripuarian influences.

Community school and dispute over permits in 2013

While there is no school in the Aachen district of Lichtenbusch, on the Belgian side there is the Lichtenbusch community school, which is also attended by children from the German side. For this purpose, the families need a special permit from the Aachen Education Authority, the issue of which is restricted by a decree of the Education Ministry from 2005. In February 2013, it caused unrest that five affected school starters were initially denied this permit, as a short way to school and familiar surroundings are not a sufficient reason, an exception to compulsory schooling in North Rhine-Westphalia, which includes attending a school in Germany close. The children would have to go to the school in Oberforstbach , 2 kilometers away . At the end of February, City Councilor Helmut Etschenberg announced that the permits would now be granted, but that this was not a blanket solution.
