The Belgian Autobahn 3 , also on French. Autoroute 3 or Dutch Autosnelweg 3, called Autosnelweg 3 , runs for 134 kilometers from Brussels via Liège to the German border near Aachen , where it merges into the federal motorway 44 .

It is one of the seven motorways that run in a star shape from Brussels through Belgium and forms an important east-west connection. The motorway starts in the east of Brussels and runs past Leuven and Liège . Near Liège at the Loncin junction, it crosses the A15 . Past Liège, the A3 runs along Verviers and Eupen to the border.

Between Herve and Walhorn the route runs in traffic routes bundling with the HSL 3 , a Belgian high-speed line , the Liege with the German border at Aachen connects.

The motorway has several names: in Flemish Brabant Koning Boudewijnsnelweg , in Walloon Brabant and in the province of Liège Autoroute Roi Baudouin or in the German-speaking community of Belgium King Baudouin motorway .

Course as a European route

On the entire route it is run simultaneously as the E 40 , from the Loncin junction also as the E 25 to the Cheratte junction and as the E 42 to the Battice junction .

history

The line between Liège and Aachen was planned in the late 1950s and opened in 1964. After a long phase of planning, the motorway between Brussels and Liège was completed in record time from 1969 (first groundbreaking on December 3, 1969) to 1973.
