The Belgian Ring 4 runs around Ghent as an urban motorway . The total length is approx. 60 km.
The motorway is particularly important for traffic to the port , but also as a bypass for the city of Ghent. In the south the motorway ring leads around the center of Ghent, in the north it runs in a wide arc around the Ghent canals and reaches as far as Zelzate . Much of the way is designed as a motorized road with split lanes.
History / condition
A bypass was planned as early as the 1950s. At that time the Ringvaart was created, a canal that also leads around the city of Ghent. One thought of a two-lane road on the bank of the canal facing the city. However, the construction of the road happened later. The bridges over the Ringvaart were not designed for the construction of such a road - apparently a planning error - and should have been demolished or significantly rebuilt. So it was decided to split the road over the two banks. Due to the development, the exits could not be laid out with correspondingly long delay strips. The maximum speed was therefore reduced from 120 to 90 km / h. Also due to the development, the entrances and exits are asymmetrical to each other. In addition, there is no connection between Zwijnaarde and the Merelbeke exit on the outer ring . Together with the construction of the Arteveldestadion , this piece is to be created. In addition, it is planned to create an exit to the new industrial area, which will be surrounded by the R4.
