history

The oldest mention of "Suinarde" comes from the 12th century and is said to be etymologically derived from "zwin" (damp earth, boggy terrain) and "aarde" (earth).

On the Roman road that led from Bavay via Oudenaarde to Blicqui , and after which Heerweg Noord and Heerweg Zuid are named today, there were finds from Roman times, including coins. (The Roman road did not run along today's Heerweg, but along today's Grote Steenweg Noord and Grote Steenweg Zuid.)

From 1344 to 1796 Zwijnaarde was the property of the abbot of St. Peters Abbey in Ghent, who had a country house built there (today's Kasteel van Zwijnaarde ). On this country estate they received important guests, e. B. the Counts of Flanders stayed there in the Saint Peters Abbey before their investiture .

Zwijnaarde remained a rural community for a long time; the southern and western parts are still rather rural today. Today the E40 (since 1950), the E17 (since 1970) and the Ringvaart (a canal , since 1969) cross the municipality. The Zwijnaarde cloverleaf cross connects the E17 and the E40.

Architecture and heritage

Parochial Church of St. Niklaas
Windmill (Bergholländer)
town hall

The parochial church of St. Niklaas was first mentioned in 1072. The current building was largely built in 1775 and expanded around 1860. After the First World War , the tower, which was destroyed in 1918, was rebuilt. The bell was stolen during the iconoclasm and sold in 1585 to Duke Julius Braunschweig-Lüneburg , who gave it to the parish of Bleckenstedt . In 2015, a citizens' initiative in Zwijnaarde financed the creation of a copy of this bell. The rectory dates from 1790.

The Art Nouveau- influenced post office was built around 1900.

The Medisch-Pedagogisch Instituut St.-Jozef of Broeders van Liefde was built 1929–1930 in Art Deco style; in the park there are also houses in Art Deco.

Nieuwgoed Castle or Nieuwhenhove became the property of the Soenens family in 1715. After the building was completely destroyed by fire in 1915, a new castle was built in 1928. The style of the new building was inspired by that of the original castle; the facade is in a neo- Louis XVI. -Style. The empire-style gate in the north is said to come from one of Ghent's city gates. In the park there are still buildings from the 18th century and an orangery that was built around 1880.

Castle De Klosse (old name: "Hoedje") is a former summer residence from the 19th century in a style based on classicism .

The former farm and post office "Ouwe Klosse" dates from the late 18th century (around 1789).

The building of today's restaurant "Oud Gemeentehuis" ("Old Town Hall") served as the town hall until the Second World War . The building was originally only one story and was increased in the 1920s.

The Bergholländer (Flemish: "beltmolen") was originally built around 1700; today's sight dates from the 19th century. The mill was originally used to produce linseed oil and later as a grain mill. In addition to wind, the mill also used diesel as a drive; between 1945 and 1965 only electricity . The mill was restored from 1971 to 1972; Since the grinding device was lost, grain can no longer be ground today. The apartment in front of the mill has existed since the early 19th century at the latest.

The Predikherenhof is an older, small palace with a park. The current form in neo-rococo style was completed in 1909. To the west of the building there are coach houses and service buildings, which were renovated in 1909.

The Zwijnaarde Castle or Castle della Faille has a history that goes back to the 14th century: in 1345 the castle came into the possession of the Saint Peters Abbey . From 1420, the protocol stipulated that the Counts of Flanders had to spend the night in St. Peter's Abbey in the castle the night before their investiture. It also served briefly as a residence for Isabella of Austria , who died there in early 1526. In the 17th century, the castle was destroyed during the iconoclasm of the Reformation and rebuilt by the abbot Joachim Arsenius Schayck. During the French occupation , all of the confiscated properties of Saint Peters Abbey, including the castle, were sold to the public in 1797. The castle has belonged to the della Faille d'Huysse family since the 19th century. Around 1836 the castle was rebuilt in the classical style. After being destroyed in World War I, it was rebuilt in neo-rococo style in 1922.

The house "De Torre" was expanded in 1637 and 1905. It originally belonged to the Saint Peters Abbey and later to the owners of the Zwijnaarde Castle.

The Rijvissche Castle was named after the oldest recorded owners, the Rijvissche family (12th-14th centuries). In the 16th century the castle came into the possession of the important Van der Sickelen family in Ghent. 1564 succeeded in the possession of Joris Rockel Fing, bailiff of Oudburg district in Ghent; it remained in the possession of the Rockelfing family until the end of the 18th century. Later the castle was owned for a while by the grandmother of the Nobel Prize winner for literature Maurice Maeterlinck ; the author lived there several times. The building still has medieval parts; other parts were added in the 16th century and around 1800.
