The Broeders van Liefde (German Brothers of Love , Latin. Fretres a caritate, FC ) are a Catholic religious order that mainly accepts lay brothers .

It was founded in 1807 by canon Peter Joseph Triest in Ghent ( Belgium ) and was primarily dedicated to nursing and schooling. Today there are several hundred brothers in Ireland , Belgium, Romania , USA , Ukraine , Italy , Indonesia , Japan , Philippines , India , Pakistan , Sri Lanka , Papua New Guinea , Canada , Peru , Brazil ,The Republic of Congo , Rwanda , Burundi , South Africa , Tanzania , Ivory Coast , Kenya , Vietnam , Republic of the Congo and the Netherlands .

The congregation itself has around 600 members worldwide and is active in around 30 countries. Twelve psychiatric clinics as well as dozen schools, crèches and orthopedic centers with around 14,000 employees are maintained in Belgium.

In Germany, the religious order caused a sensation in 2017 with its commitment to active euthanasia. The Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith decreed in March 2020 that the psychiatric clinics are no longer allowed to call themselves "Catholic"; The reason is active euthanasia for the mentally ill.
