The Belgian motorway 11 , also on French. Autoroute 11 or Dutch Autosnelweg 11, called Autosnelweg 11 , runs for a total of 40 kilometers from Antwerp ( R1 ) to Zelzate , where it merges into national road 49 . The plan is to expand the N49 to a motorway as far as Zeebrugge and to rededicate it to the A11. The motorway is part of the Europastraße 34 .
history
In 1937 the construction of the route from Antwerp via Zelzate and Knokke to Heist began. At that time, the route was planned as a national road and implemented as the N49 in 1983. The conversion of the N49 to the A11 began in the 1990s . The first motorway sections were expanded and opened at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st century . The last section of the A11 near Zelzate, where the A11 meets the R4 , was opened to traffic in July 2004.
