La Réole ( Gascon La Reula or L'Arrèula ) is a small town with 4356 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Gironde department in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine in France . It belongs to the canton of Le Réolais et Les Bastides . The residents call themselves Réolais .
geography
La Réole is located on the Garonne , 62 kilometers southeast of Bordeaux and 19 kilometers east of Langon , six kilometers west of the border with the Lot-et-Garonne department . The main part of the small town is on the orographically right bank of the river, the hamlet of Rouergue is on the left bank. Especially for Rouergue there is a risk of flooding by the Garonne after storms. In the years 1835, 1855, 1875, 1879, 1918, 1927, 1930, 1981, 2006 and 2009 the Garonne caused floods.
history
The name of the city was derived from Regula Benedicti . Around the year 977 the settlement was assigned to the Benedictine abbey of Fleury .
In 1793 La Réole received as La Réole Saint Aignan in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality and in 1801 under the current name the right to local self-government .
From February 17, 1800 to September 10, 1926, the Arrondissement de La Réole existed , which included Monségur , Pellegrue , La Réole, Saint-Macaire , Sauveterre-de-Guyenne and Targon . La Réole was the main town. The entire district then passed to the Arrondissement Langon .

La Réole had the most inhabitants in 1793 (5035), and least in 1921 (3644).
Culture and sights
Buildings
The former Benedictine - Priory Saint-Pierre is officially classified as a historic monument classified. It was built in 1704 and is owned by the municipality and the département.

La Réole XIII is a member of the French "Thirteen Rugby League ".
Infrastructure
La Réole is passed by the Via Lemovicensis , one of the four historical “ Routes of the pilgrims in France ”.
The city has its own train station on the Bordeaux – Sète line of the SNCF . It is used by TER Aquitaine trains.
There is a motorway connection on the A62 autoroute .
