Mairie Uzeste

Uzeste is a French municipality with 430 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Gironde department in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine ( Aquitaine ).

geography

The Ciron flows through the municipality. Uzeste is located about seven kilometers west of the border of the Landes de Gascogne Regional Nature Park ( Parc naturel régional des Landes de Gascogne ) and is surrounded by the Landes du Pudau forest. Langon is 13.5 kilometers northeast of the municipality .

history

Uzeste was founded in the 12th century by the de Got family. Bertrand de Got was appointed Pope in 1305 and was called Pope Clement V. He had the Uzeste collegiate church enlarged.

Attractions

Notre-Dame Collegiate Church

The Gothic collegiate church of Notre-Dame still has Romanesque side walls from the 13th century. The construction of the apse was ordered by Clement V in the 14th century. His grave and that of a member of the Grailly family also date from the 14th century. The nave and bell tower were rebuilt in the 16th century. The church was classified as a Monument historique (historical monument) in 1840 .

The main occupations of the Uzestois (inhabitants) are trade and agriculture ( forestry and the breeding of domestic cattle ).

Personalities

In the church of Our Lady of Uzeste is the grave of Pope Clement V (* 1250-1265; † 1314), the 1309, the papal residence from Rome to Avignon moved.

Bernard Lubat (born 12 May 1945 in Uzeste) is a jazz - pianist , of the music festival Uzeste Musical initiated.
