history

The Roman road Via Aquitania led from Bordeaux (Burdigala) through Cérons (Sirio) to Toulouse (Tolosa) . Gabarnac is on the D299 departmental road, which was connected to the Via Aquitania in the Gallo-Roman period (52 BC to 486 AD) .

The 21 hamlets of Gabarnac were originally 21 large farmsteads that differed, for example, in the activities of their residents. The differences led to the development of place names. The place name Gabarnac is said to have developed from a Gallo-Roman name at a time when family names were not yet in use. In the hamlet Le Matelot 1747 lived clog Michel Mathelot. People went “to Mathelot” to buy new wooden shoes, which is how the place name came about. The charcoal burners used to live and work in the hamlet of Le Fourneau ('the stove') .

In 1793 Gabarnac received in the course of the French Revolution (1789–1799) the status of a municipality and in 1801 through the administrative reform under Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821) the right to local self-government . Until the end of the 19th century Gabarnac did not have its own mairie ('mayor's office') or school, but was dependent on Monprimblanc for this purpose. A “parish hall”, which served as the mayor's office and school, was built in 1889 in the hamlet of Bidonnet. In the same year over 50 children started school there. The school library was set up in 1892.
