The Bordeaux wine region

The Premières Côtes de Bordeaux wine-growing region is part of the superordinate Bordeaux region and extends as a four to five kilometer wide strip along the Garonne for a length of around 60 kilometers from Ambarès on the outskirts of Bordeaux in a southeast direction to Saint-Maixant near Sainte-Croix- you-Mont . The area includes the municipal appellations Cadillac , Loupiac and Sainte-Croix-du-Mont , and in the southeastern extension is the appellation Côtes de Bordeaux-Saint-Macaire . The appellation has had the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC for short) since July 31, 1937 .

Approved vineyards are in the communities of Bassens , Bauch , Béguey , Bouliac , Cadillac , Cambes , Camblanes-et-Meynac , Capian , Carbon-Blanc , Cardan , Carignan , Cénac , Cenon , Donzac , Floirac , Gabarnac , Haux , Langoiran , Laroque , Latresne , Lestiac-sur-Garonne , Le Tourne , Lormont , Monprimblanc , Omet , Paillet , Quinsac , Rions , Saint-Caprais-de-Bordeaux , Sainte-Eulalie , Saint-Germain-de-Grave , Saint-Maixant , Semens , Tabanac , Verdelais , Villenave-de-Rions and Yvrac . The 37 municipalities are allowed to add their names to the appellation if the minimum alcohol content of the wine exceeds 11.5 percent by volume. The newer alluvial land directly on the banks of the Garonne is only classified as a simple Bordeaux appellation.

The area is located in the south-west of the large subregional appellation Entre-Deux-Mers , part of the Bordeaux wine-growing region . The vineyards cover around 3,700 hectares on gravel and calcareous soil on the right bank of the Garonne . The mean annual harvest is 195,000 hectoliters of wine .

Only around 600 hectares are planted with the white grape varieties Sémillon , Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle . The relationship has changed a lot since 1976, as the white wines of the region no longer sold well. In the early 1980s there were 50% white and 50% red grapes. In addition, the independent Cadillac division was separated from the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux appellation in 1973 . The sugar content of the must must be at least 200 g / l (see must weight ). After fermentation , the minimum alcohol content of the white wine is 11.5 percent by volume and the residual sugar content must not be below 4 g / l.

Permitted red grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon , Cabernet Franc , Carménère , Merlot , Malbec and Petit Verdot . The sugar content of the must must be at least 178 g / l. After fermentation, the minimum alcohol content of the red wine is 10.5 percent by volume.

In general, the harvest restriction is 50 hectoliters / hectare, and the planting density must not be less than 4,500 vines per hectare.
