Entre deux mers

The Entre deux mers ( French: "Between two seas") wine-growing region covers over a quarter (23,000 hectares) of the Bordelais , making it the largest sub-regional appellation in the region. The name “Entre deux Mers” does not come from la mer (= sea), but from marée , the French word for high tide. Because in the two rivers Garonne and Dordogne , which border the wine-growing region, the tide pushing inland from the Atlantic via the Gironde is noticeable. However, this would also allow a derivation of la mer (= sea), since traces of salt water should be found in the two rivers during this process, so that the name can also be interpreted as a play on words.

The appellation refers exclusively to dry white wines with less than 4 g / l residual sugar content. The predominantly clay and gravel soil is particularly suitable for this. The main grape varieties are Sauvignon Blanc , Sémillon and Muscadelle . Merlot Blanc and Ugni Blanc play a supporting role . The formal requirements for a white entre deux mers are hardly higher than for simple Bordeaux sec , but the winemakers in the area only sell their better qualities than entre deux mers . These white wines are lighter than the Graves and go well with fish dishes.

In 2002 a good 84,000 hectoliters were produced on 1,448 hectares. In 1992 the production was still 168,500 hl on 2,700 hectares of vineyards. The falling demand expressed in this has meant that the Entre deux mers area is now predominantly producing red wines (approx. 75%). They may only be sold as Bordeaux or Bordeaux supérieur and can be balanced and charming.

Skin benauge

The municipalities of Arbis, Cantois, Escoussans, Cornac, Ladaux, Mourens, Saint-Pierre-de-Bat, Soulignac and Targon in the south of the area have the right to use the appellation designation “ Entre deux mers Haut-Benauge ”. If your white wine has more than 4 g / l residual sugar, it receives the appellation “ Bordeaux Haut-Benauge ”. Both terms are very rare.
