Colombo Max

Colombo Max (born May 10, 1877 in Munich , † September 5, 1970 in Ammerland ; actually Columbus Josef Max ) was a German painter .

Life

Max was the son of the history painter Gabriel von Max and a student of Gabriel von Hackl and Wilhelm von Diez at the Munich Art Academy , as well as Anton Ažbe at his private art school. As a member of the “Königlich Privilegierte Münchener Künstlergenossenschaft” (Royal Privileged Munich Artists' Cooperative), he was given the opportunity from 1912 to present his works to the public at the annual exhibitions in the Glass Palace . He and his older brother Corneille Max stayed away from the progressive artists 'associations of his time, which were partly critical and provocative towards the tutelage of the academy and the “artists' cooperative” . The brothers are not part of that avant-garde ; from today's point of view, their work seems rather conservative in terms of style and iconography . Colombo's artistically conservative- naturalistic style in graphics and painting as well as his down-to-earth work in mostly rural seclusion underline this impression.

The trauma of World War I and the changes that followed were clearly reflected in Colombo's oeuvre: in the 1920s, as a dedicated pacifist , he drew postcard designs for the war participants under the motto "Never again war" . Some of his naturalistic works from the interwar period reflect the zeitgeist of an optimistic new beginning, but others testify above all to his attentive closeness to nature. Colombo Max formulated his criticism of the politics of the Third Reich with the “Self-Portrait with Diamond Flag and Crucifix” or the “Group Portrait of the White Rose” .

His adopted son , the doctor Dr. med. Thomas Max , was shot dead on the street in Grünwald in 1945 as a member of the Bavarian Freedom Campaign by the local Volkssturmführer Friedrich Ehrlicher .
