Alexis Bouvard
Alexis Bouvard (born June 27, 1767 in Les Contamines-Montjoie , † June 7, 1843 in Paris ) was a French astronomer .
Live and act
Bouvard came from a poor Savoyard farming family.
Bouvard became director of the Paris observatory and in 1804 of the Bureau des Longitudes . He discovered eight comets . He also calculated the positions of the planets Jupiter , Saturn and Uranus . Uranus orbit tables led to discrepancies with his observations. From this he concluded that another planet existed, which was then found with Neptune and later the dwarf planet Pluto .
He carried out all the calculations for Laplaces Mécanique céleste and got Jean-Félix Adolphe Gambart to study astronomy.
In 1803 he became a member of the Académie des Sciences . Since 1808 he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , since 1826 of the Royal Society and since 1828 of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . The moon valley Vallis Bouvard was named after him in 1970.
