Former town hall
Burned out houses

Battice is a town in the Walloon Region of Belgium , about 20 km from Aachen and Liège . The village with 4076 inhabitants (1976) has belonged to the city of Herve since the municipal merger in 1977 . Fort Battice, part of the Liège fortification ring, is located on the outskirts .

During the attack on Belgium at the beginning of World War I , Battice was largely destroyed due to retaliation by German troops. Allegedly, some villagers shot a squadron of Uhlans as snipers ( franc tireurs ) . Since the perpetrators could not be identified, the German soldiers rounded up the residents, killed 33 of them and then burned 147 houses.
