Location and economy
Tienen is located on the E 40 motorway and on the Brussels – Liège railway line , about 20 kilometers east of Leuven . The inner-Belgian French - Dutch language border is less than 10 kilometers south of the city.
Tourism is not insignificant, but more important are industry (Tienen has, among other things, the largest sugar cube factory in Belgium), trade and the service sector typical of a regional center.
The Photovoltech group maintains its production facilities for solar cells and solar modules here . The Robert Bosch GmbH has a factory for windshield wipers with about 1,600 employees at this location.
The SESVanderHave group is also active there as one of the world's largest manufacturers of sugar beet seeds.
history
The region was inhabited by Celts (Gauls) in pre-Christian times . Archaeological excavations are regularly carried out in the community , which have already brought many, often surprising, finds (to be seen in the “Het Toreke” museum; see also the city's website). Probably the noble family of the Barons von Thienen-Adlerflycht founded and ruled the city around the year 800 AD and named themselves after the city. In the 13th and 14th centuries Tienen was important because of the sheet weaving . After 1500, however, their economy went downhill. Tienen was plagued by acts of war several times, including a few times in the 16th century, 1635 (almost total destruction) and 1914.
On May 13, 1940, the third day of the western campaign , the 'Battle of Tirlemont' took place: the German XVI. Panzer Corps ( 3rd and 6th Panzer Divisions ) fought against the French 2nd and 3rd Light Mechanized Divisions (DLM). After heavy fighting, the French withdrew. Both sides lost many tanks.
